Bahamas underwaterIn April 2005,  Explorer Ventures began offering weekly liveaboard diving excursions in the southern Bahamas, based in George Town, Great Exuma. For 2011, we’re pleased to announce that the Turks & Caicos Explorer II will continue to explore the best that this remote region has to offer, departing from both Exuma and from Providenciales, Turks & Caicos.  Guests will experience big-animal action, pristine walls and reefs and secluded diving at uninhabited islands in the remote "Out Islands" of the Bahamas. Guests will dive sites around San Salvador, Rum Cay, Conception Island, Long Island, Samana Cay, Mayaguana and the Plana Cays, depending on the itinerary.

Both the shallow banks and the plunging walls found in the "Outer Islands" of the Bahamas provide a habitat for productive juvenile nurseries. Gulf Stream waters and assorted rifts running through these areas provide a perfect environment for pelagic species. This combination generates a larger and more varied population of marine species than normally found in the Caribbean.

Bahamas underwaterMany of these remote islands are untouched. The tiny capital, George Town, one of our ports, is located next to picturesque Elizabeth Harbour. The local straw market, where one can view Bahamian women and their traditional straw craftwork is worth a visit to see an aspect of the unique local culture. Our other port, Providenciales (usually called Provo) is one of the islands in the Turks & Caicos Islands and is a British Commonwealth Colony. Provo offers brilliant white sand beaches surrounded by turquoise waters and offers some hiking and sightseeing opportunities.

The Bahamas encompass more than 700 islands, many of them uninhabited, and span more than 1,000 square miles of ocean. With a maximum elevation of 206 feet, the islands vary widely in history, atmosphere and diving. When Christopher Columbus made his first landfall in the hemisphere on one of these outer islands (where depends on who you talk to), the 500-year residency of the peaceful Lucayan Indians quickly came to an end; since then, the Islands' proximity to Florida has caught the fancy of explorers, settlers, pirates and traders alike.

The Bahamian Dollar (equivalent to the US Dollar) is the official currency of the Bahamas; both US and Bahamian dollars are accepted interchangeably throughout the islands. Power outlets and 115-volt power are the same as in the United States. Passports are required of all US visitors; an ongoing or return ticket is also required. For further information, visit
