Explorer Ventures 2008 “Ventures into the Reef” Contests
Explorer Ventures announces “Ventures into the Reef,” a series of competitions in recognition of “International Year of the Reef (IYOR 2008).” We are inviting people to share their underwater adventures in celebration of the beauty and excitement that reefs provide to us. There are three categories in which people can participate; best underwater photo, best topside photo and best trip commentary. The competition is free to enter.
International Year of the Reef 2008 (IYOR08)
The first International Year of the Reef was designated in 1997 by the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) in response to the idea that coral reefs were being subjected to increasing threats globally. The goal of the initiative was to increase awareness and understanding of coral reefs.
The goals of IYOR 2008 as specified by ICRI are to:
- Strengthen awareness about the ecological, economic, social and cultural value of coral reefs and associated ecosystems.
- Improve understanding of the critical threats to coral reefs and generate both practical and innovative solutions to reduce these threats.
- Generate urgent action at all levels to develop and implement effective management strategies for conservation and sustainable use of these ecosystems.

“Venture into the Reef”
Competition Rules and Specifications
Eligibility: The competition is open to all non-professional photographers, 18 years or older, and not employed by Explorer Ventures within the contest dates. Incomplete or late entries will not be accepted, nor will photos that have previously won another photography or literary competition.
Deadline: Photos and commentaries must be submitted by August 31, 2008
How to enter: Email the photo or trip commentary and completed entry form to contest@explorerventures.com. Incomplete entries will not be accepted. Explorer Ventures is not responsible for lost or misdirected entries.
Specifications:
- Entries must be in digital format. Please no file over 10 megabytes.
- Photos or commentary must be the complete work of the entrant and the copyright of the entry must belong to the participant
- No more than five photos may be submitted by each participant.
- Photos and trip commentaries must have been taken or written between Aug 31, 2007 and August 31, 2008
Copyright: You must be the sole author and owner of the copyright for all images and commentaries entered. By entering your images and writings into the competition, you grant Explorer Ventures a non-exclusive license to reproduce the images and commentaries for any purpose.
Ethics: Entrants must not infringe on the rights of any other photographer or person or submit images that involve the willful harassment of wildlife or damage to the environment by the photographer. If cruel or unethical practices are suspected by the judges, the entry will be disqualified.
Judging will be done by Explorer Ventures staff. Explorer Ventures reserves the right to choose the winner as they see fit. Decisions of Explorer Ventures will be final and binding.
Notification: Winners will be announced in the Explorer Ventures September Newsletter.
Prizes: The winners of each competition will receive a $500 credit* towards a future trip on any Explorer Ventures boat in Australia or the Caribbean and five copies of the 2009 Explorer Ventures calendar. Runners up will receive a certificate for free nitrox to be used on any Explorer Ventures boat in Australia or the Caribbean and five copies of the 2009 Explorer Ventures calendar
*$500 credit can be used on Caribbean Explorer I, Caribbean Explorer II, Turks and Caicos Explorer II, or Nimrod Explorer. The credit must be used before 31 December 2009, is non-transferable and cannot be substituted.
