Medical Requirements:
In accordance with Australian Standard AS4005-1, the Nimrod Explorer requires that divers provide proof of a dive medical examination in the following cases:
- Divers who have not dived within the past 12 months and whose medical condition has changed during that time period.
- Divers participating in a dive course for which they will receive a certification card at the completion of the course.
- Divers having any of the following conditions: asthma, heart or lung problems, insulin dependent diabetes, or epilepsy.
Due to the variation in medical standards from country to country, a dive medical obtained in another country may not be valid in Australia. Exams are available in Cairns at the 24-Hour Medical Centre (on the corner of Florence and Grafton Streets), where a dive doctor is on staff.
A courtesy shuttle runs to and from the clinic between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The clinic operates on a first in, first served basis; therefore persons wishing to obtain a medical certification should allow ample time to do so prior to their departure on board the Nimrod Explorer. The cost of the exam is approximately A$44, with an additional saline test for asthmatics costing approximately A$66. Details can be obtained by emailing the Centre at
