Launched in September 2020, Tiburon Explorer is the largest liveaboard in the Galapagos, featuring state-of-the-art safety systems and an itinerary that showcases the archipelago’s most breathtaking dive sites. Tiburon Explorer is a Green Fins member that prioritizes marine conservation.
From the Northern islands of Darwin and Wolf to the Western points of Cabo Douglas (Fernandina) and Punta Vicente Roca (Isabela), as well as Cousins Rock, the vessel takes guests deep into the heart of the region’s biodiversity. In addition to underwater adventures, passengers visit the highlands of Santa Cruz to see giant tortoises and North Seymour Island, home to diverse bird species.
As part of its commitment to responsible tourism, Tiburon Explorer became a Green Fins Digital Member, reinforcing its dedication to protecting the marine environment. Jennifer Cumming, Galapagos General Manager, explains why becoming a member is a must:
“We’re fortunate to operate in an area where conservation is a priority. The Galapagos National Park has strict regulations to protect its endemic life and geology, and we wanted to take it a step further. Green Fins provides internationally recognized tools that help us educate both our crew and guests, using a bottom-up approach to awareness and action.”
Operating sustainably in a remote and ecologically sensitive area comes with its challenges. One of the biggest challenges according to Jennifer is integrating best environmental practices in a culturally sensitive way.
“Recycling isn’t as common here as in some other parts of the world, and single-use plastics are still widely used. We’ve addressed this through education, helping our crew understand the long-term impacts on the environment and how visitors perceive these practices. Sustainability isn’t just about conservation—it’s an investment in the future.”
Tiburon Explorer has taken significant steps to reduce its environmental impact, including:
· Eliminating most single-use plastics onboard
· Switching to biodegradable cleaning products, shampoos, soaps, and conditioners
· Implementing detailed environmental briefings for divers to promote responsible practices underwater
These efforts have earned positive feedback from guests and strengthened Tiburon Explorer’s international recognition, especially with organizations like PADI, which actively supports Green Fins initiatives.
“While it’s difficult to quantify the direct business impact, we know that sustainability resonates with our guests. They appreciate the effort we put into protecting the ocean, and that, in turn, enhances their overall experience.”
By combining world-class diving with a strong commitment to conservation, Tiburon Explorer is proving that sustainability and adventure go hand in hand. Through ongoing education, operational changes, and partnerships like Green Fins, they are paving the way for a greener and bluer future in the Galapagos.
