For more than two decades, the Sea & Learn Foundation has brought scientists, educators, conservationists, and curious minds together on the island of Saba to explore the natural world.
Each October, the award-winning flagship program transforms the island of Saba into a living classroom, offering presentations, field projects, citizen science opportunities, and hands-on learning experiences that connect people of all ages with the environment around them.
Explorer Ventures Fleet has long been proud to support those efforts.
Explorer Ventures Fleet has been diving Saba since 1987, and our connection to the island extends far beyond the reef. Each year, we donate a liveaboard trip aboard Caribbean Explorer II as a premier fundraising prize for the Sea & Learn, helping support the program’s ongoing work in environmental education, conservation, and community engagement. We also look for opportunities to participate directly in initiatives that inspire future generations of ocean advocates, scientists, and maritime professionals.
This year’s event provided one of those opportunities. As part of Sea & Learn 2026, local teens from Aqua Vibes and The Spot Youth Center were invited aboard Caribbean Explorer II for a behind-the-scenes look at life on a working liveaboard vessel.
After arriving by tender on a typically breezy Saba day, the group stepped aboard and began exploring areas of the vessel that most guests rarely see. Guided by Captain Amber and crew, the students toured the wheelhouse, learned about navigation systems and vessel operations, visited the engine room, reviewed dive schedules and trip logistics, and gained insight into the many careers that keep a vessel operating safely at sea.
One of the highlights of the visit was a practical knot-tying lesson. What began as a demonstration quickly turned into a friendly competition as students raced to master the techniques being taught by the crew.
The experience offered a glimpse into the many opportunities that exist within the maritime industry. From captains and engineers to dive professionals, hospitality teams, and marine scientists, the ocean supports a wide range of rewarding careers that many young people may not have considered before stepping aboard. The crew also highlighted how roles at sea often overlap, with one staff member introducing himself as engineer, chef, and purser—demonstrating the versatility and teamwork required to keep a vessel running smoothly.
That spirit of discovery is at the heart of Sea & Learn.
Whether participants are helping with conservation projects, learning from visiting scientists, exploring Saba’s unique ecosystems, or stepping aboard a liveaboard vessel for the first time, the goal remains the same: creating meaningful connections between people and the natural world around them.
